does anyone here own an e39 540i? What have been your experiences so far? Maintainance issues, mods, shortcomings or little known quirks. I am really interested in getting one but don't want to get taken or get into it without a plan.

You must've read this?

I would start searching BMW forums they all have maintenance sections that have a lot of useful information. I would also search for cars to buy on the forums to as they are more likely to be maintained. And as I would suggest to anyone buying used cars is to take it to an independent mechanic to have them do a pre-purchase inspection.

That's exactly what I read. Did a test drive the day after and was very impressed

Yeah, I looked at the forums and there a lot of things that could go wrong (at different mileage) and I'm optimistic that I find one that isn't junk. Even so, if I find junk I can spend the time during the summer fixing it as I usually ride a motorbike. That's where cost comes in. The things that have me most worried are the chain guides, electricals (the one I tested came up with a weird vague warning) clutch, and suspension(there are a few parts in the steering rack and rear suspension that came crap as stock. Good point on the forums though. Didn't think to look there.

I've always found forums aren't a particularly good way of gauging how reliable a car is, or how often things go wrong/how likely they are to go wrong. People don't tend to post 'another 10k miles with no problems', but they do tend to post 'drove 8k miles and my diff fell off'. It offers a scary perspective on a particular car.

You seem to be a smart chap though so you probably already know that :)
